ART AND DESIGN AT PRINCE HENRY’S

All students will have the opportunity to express themselves in a wide range of approaches and media from the very outset in Year 7 all the way through to GCSE and AS/A2 level at the school.

The Art department firmly believe in giving all students the opportunity to experiment in media such as print, drawing, painting, collage and mixed media, clay, construction, textiles etc. Students will develop a knowledge of World Art as well as contemporary practice as they develop their art making skills throughout their creative studies at Prince Henry.

Year 7

Six themes and different media investigated such as imagination, collage, observation, three-dimensional imagery, graphic design, expressive mask making, group work, various painting approaches.

Year 9

Abstraction, lino-printing, surrealism, mural work.

GCSE

Year 10 projects such as ‘The Head’, landscape, Cubism, response to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park visit. Will then develop into far more student-orientated themes during their Year 11 coursework and exam.

We believe that diversity and supporting the individual is paramount in our teaching at the school and all projects are differentiated accordingly.

Year 12/13

‘A’ level Art at Prince Henry’s is rich in variety of media, understanding of contemporary Art practice and utilises many faculties of the individual on both creative and social levels. All students are asked to keep work journals as they develop throughout the course, are asked to do personal research, make gallery visits (the school runs a five day foreign field trip every year for Year 12/13 students to Paris or Holland to see World Art). There are very large numbers studying ‘A’ level Art at school, approximately 70 (the largest course across the City of Leeds) and many of our students go on to careers in the Arts such as architecture, interior design, fashion and fine art.
