KS3 COURSE OVERVIEW

ART DEPARTMENT: CURRICULUM STATEMENTS
KS3

KEY STAGE 3 - YEARS 7, 8 & 9

Pupils in Years 7, 8 & 9 are following a National Curriculum course in Art. The flexible programmes of study cut across the two Attainment Targets and offer a coherent framework for development. They consist of a number of stands. These are:-

Attainment Target 1 - Investigating and Making

Recording what has been seen, imagined or remembered
Gathering and using reference materials
Using different materials and techniques in practical work
Reviewing and modifying work

Attainment Target 2 - Knowledge & Understanding

Developing understanding of the work or artists, crafts people and designers and applying this knowledge to their own work
Responding to and evaluating art, craft and design, including their own and others’ work.

Homework

We regard this as vital to the development of the individual and see it as a way of reinforcing basic skills and of stimulating visual awareness and creativity through sketchbooks, collections etc. It is always in support of classwork or will be preparation for a coming project.

In Years 7, 8 & 9, Art appears on the homework timetable as (*ART), signifying that we will set assignments as and when appropriate (approximately 30 minutes in duration). When homework is set in one lesson, it must be handed in during the following week’s lesson. Marks will be awarded for both effort and attainment. Time used for homework must be clearly recorded by your work.

Method of Assessment

Effort will be graded, as will the level of achievement reached in the Attainment Targets. Grades will be based on an average of all the assignments carried out both in school and for homework. Responsible behaviour in the Art Rooms will be expected at all times and will be reported to parents.

By the end of Key Stage 3 the majority of pupils should demonstrate a developing ability to analyse and represent chosen features of their environment, with technical and expressive skills in evidence. They should be able to research, organise and experiment with relevant resources and materials and make effective use of tools and equipment. They should be capable of refining their own work and be able to use appropriate “art” vocabulary to express both their own ideas and those relating to other artists whose work we have chosen to explore.

Equipment

We expect all pupils to bring basic items of art equipment to every lesson. This includes HB and 2B pencils, a soft eraser, a pencil sharpener, a ruler and a pen. It is also useful to have coloured crayons or paints available for homework assignments. At present the Art dept can provide all students with personalised A4 sketchbooks, for their homework, at the cost price of £1.00. Students should see their Art teacher for more details.
