BUSINESS STUDIES KS4 COURSE OVERVIEW

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: MR MORDUE

AQA BUSINESS STUDIES (Specification A)

This two-year GCSE course provides an interesting and useful insight into the workings of business. It provides an excellent qualification for those students hoping to gain employment and further experience in the business world. It will also prove useful to ALL students who, while not working in ‘commercial’ areas, will nevertheless find that the knowledge and skills gained will allow them to broaden their understanding of the business world and apply the skills to other subjects and areas.

Subject Content

The specification has been designed to make full use of real-world examples and therefore relates to the practical, working world of business and the community at large outside the classroom. The course involves an investigation of the setting up and running of a business in the local area, and includes the business environment, the structure and organisation of business, business behaviour and people and business.

The course is taught using assignments and case studies to simulate realistic business experiences and problems. Two of the three weekly periods are devoted to theory and one to ICT in business; this lesson will be in one of the ICT suites.

Scheme Of Assessment

The course is assessed by two components:

Examination: A single written paper based on a pre-distributed Case Study (75%)

Coursework: Coursework is seen as an integral part of the learning process. There is a choice of options for coursework and within each option there
is some freedom to design individual pieces of work. (25%)
