NEW BUILDING UPDATE

On Thursday 10 April 2008, the new state of the art extension at Prince Henry’s Grammar School was officially opened. The opening was celebrated with the burial of a time capsule that will be in place for the next 50 years.

Local Governors and some of the Schools Foundation Governors attended to watch the time capsule be buried. It also gave them the opportunity to have a look around the brand new building. The completion of the building has come as a great relief to staff and students who were extremely keen to use their new facilities. The building was open to students when they returned from their break at Easter and has been described as “wonderful” and “really modern”.

Governors, teachers, councillors and students welcomed His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent KG to Prince Henry's Grammar School's new £5 million science block on Thursday 10 July. The Royal visitor was in Wharfedale to officially open the 11 laboratory facility, which was funded by Leeds City Council and the £1,655,000 proceeds from the sale of the school's Newall annexe.

The Duke was shown around the cutting-edge new facilities and the school gym, by headteacher John Steel and other members of staff, governors, and special guests including Otley Town Mayor Councillor Jim Spencer and Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland. Following the tour Mr Steel, officially welcoming the Royal visitor, asked him to unveil a plaque commemorating what will officially be known as The Hindle Science Building - named after former student and pioneer in the development of artificial fibres, Walter Hindle. The Duke said: "It is always a great pleasure to come to a school with a long history and to be opening something that's brand new and modern such as your science block." He then enjoyed a quick chat with the school's newly elected Head Girl and Head Boy, Natasha Munro and Jack Collins in Year 13 who had helped show him around the classrooms.
