When selecting a language course, you are welcome to call our Language College Director, Chris Lillington, to discuss which level may be most appropriate for you. The following provides a general guide (does not apply to Latin or Sign Language):

Beginners

A basic course for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. Particular focus on “holiday language”.

Continuation

A course which revises and builds on basic knowledge for those with at least one year of previous study.

Intermediate 1

A course with a stronger focus on grammatical awareness and conversational language, for those with at least two years of previous study.

Intermediate 2

A course for students who want to be able to converse using a range of tenses and topics, with at least three years of previous study.

Conversation / Advanced

For those with at least four years of previous study. This course explores a wider range of topics and has a strong focus on conversational language.

All courses run initially for 10 weeks.

Many courses run for a further 10 weeks after Christmas, and a final 10 weeks after Easter, subject to interest and tutor availability.

Our Community Education language programme has received national acclaim for the unique learning opportunities which it has brought to the local area. Since 1998 numbers of students on language courses have increased ten-fold. This is because:

  • We use our additional Language College funding to provide a direct subsidy of £10 for all students enrolling on language courses, as compared with other courses from our Community Education Programme.
  • As we are an independent provider, we make up our own rules! This means that we are very flexible in accommodating individual requests to add new languages and levels to the programme. Likewise, we have no rigid policies in terms of minimum numbers. Instead, we consider the viability of each course individually.
  • Our language tutors have access to state-of-the-art technology, including interactive whiteboards, satellite television and a PC-based language laboratory.
  • We aim to establish a friendly, supportive environment for learning languages, in which students will develop their language skills, gain a greater insight into the culture and people of the relevant countries, and get to know other people with a similar interest.
