Course Overview - Year 7

The Roman Empire [our choice of a European study] -  1 Term

  • How Rome began
  • How and why it became an empire
  • The army
  • The role of important individuals e.g. Hannibal, or Julius Caesar or Augustus Caesar
  • Roman society from senators to slaves
  • Aspects of life in Roman times e.g. Leisure, religion, trade etc
  • Roman legacy: how they influenced later societies including 21st century Britain

Britain 1666-1500 the Middle Ages - 1 Term

  • Invasion and conquest 1066
  • Castle development
  • A selection from the following:
  • Significant events studied in depth e.g. Black Death, Peasants’ Revolt, Death of Becket etc.
  • The role of important individuals, some of the following:
  • e.g. William Duke of Normandy, Harold Godwinson King of England, King Henry II and Thomas Becket, King Richard I, King John
  • Aspects of life in the Middle Ages e.g. the importance of the Church, village and town life, warfare, health and disease.

2nd Half of Summer Term

  • Indians of North America [our choice of a world study before 1900]
  • Lifestyle and beliefs of Indians in one or two regions e.g. Plains Indians
  • Impact of European settlers on lives of Indians
  • Conflict between Plains Indians and the government e.g. Battle of the Little Bighorn

Main exam of the year on Britain 1066-1500

Course overview - Year 8

Britain 1500-1750 [The making of the UK] - 1 Term

  • The power of the Tudor monarchs
  • The Reformation, religious changes in England in 16th century
  • Significant events e.g. the Armada, the English Civil War
  • The importance of individuals e.g. Henry VIII, Oliver Cromwell etc

Britain 1750-1900 [Expansion Trade and Industry] - 1 Term

  • How Britain changed: the Industrial Revolution
  • Political change, revolutionary ideas
  • The Chartists and the Luddites
  • Reform, the right to vote

The First World War 1914-18 [First part of World Study after 1900] - 1 Term

  • Causes of the war
  • Trench warfare, the experience of the soldiers
  • Significant events in the war major land and sea battles
  • Impact of the war on Britain 1914-18
  • The changing role of women during the war
  • The effects of the war on Britain
  • The peace treaties: how the map of Europe changed

The main exam of the year will be on the causes of the First World War.

Course overview - Year 9

The Assassination of President Kennedy [World study after 1900] - 1 Term

  • Events of November 1963
  • The evidence: eye witnesses, forensic evidence, photographic evidence etc.
  • Kennedy and the Cold War
  • Who killed him? Warren Commission view.
  • Conspiracy theories and the evidence.

Main exams of the year based on Kennedy topic.

20th Century Study Units - 2 Terms
