Welcome to the Community Education Programme at Prince Henry’s Grammar School for 2007 / 2008

 

What is Prince Henry’s Grammar School?

Prince Henry’s is a large, highly-successful comprehensive school which has been serving the town of Otley and the surrounding area for almost 400 years.

 

Why does the school have its own Community Education Programme?

At Prince Henry’s we are proud of the special place we have long enjoyed at the heart of the community, and we decided some years ago to establish our own programme of learning opportunities for the benefit of local people. Our Community Education Programme is run independently, and has expanded significantly in recent years to respond to requests from those who live and work in our neighbourhood.

 

How is the Community Education Programme funded?

We receive some additional funding as a Specialist Language College, which we use to provide a direct discount for all students enrolled on language courses. Apart from this we receive no other subsidies or grants. However, the programme is run on a non profit-making basis, so as long as we can cover the tutor’s salary through enrolment fees, we can allow all courses to run.

 

How are our courses structured?

All our courses run for a 10-week block initially. In many cases, students will be invited to continue for a further 10 weeks after Christmas, and then another 10 weeks after Easter. Therefore many courses actually run for 30weeks in total. We use this system of termly enrolment because our students prefer it.

 

Who can attend courses at Prince Henry’s?

Anyone! Most of our courses are accessible to students of all ages, and we welcome an increasing number of family groups who come together to learn a new skill or develop a hobby. Although traditionally many of our students have come from Otley and neighbouring villages, more and more students are travelling from Leeds, Bradford, Ilkley and Harrogate, from where the school is easily accessible.

What makes Prince Henry’s different?

We believe that we offer a broad range of high-quality learning opportunities, in a friendly environment. Our courses are not accredited, and therefore they are free from the pressure of assessments and “portfolios of evidence” which some providers encourage their students to complete.
