TEACHING MFL TO YEAR 6

Since September 2000, staff from the MFL department at Prince Henry’s have been going out to our partner primary schools on a weekly basis to teach Spanish. They provide a half-hour lesson to all Year 6 pupils each week throughout the year, giving pupils a taste of a foreign language which, we hope, will motivate them to want to learn more about other languages and cultures when they go on to secondary school.

Currently we teach at the following schools:

  • Adel Primary School
  • All Saints Primary School
  • Ashfield Primary School
  • Bramhope Primary School
  • Pool C of E Primary School
  • Westgate Primary School
  • The Whartons School

The course concentrates primarily on listening and speaking skills, and most pupils will be able to reach National Curriculum Level 2 in these areas by the end of the year. It also provides them with some important language-learning skills which will be transferable to whichever foreign languages they learn in the future.

The primary languages initiative is an important part of our transition work as a school between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. Many pupils and their parents comment on how popular this feature of our Language College community programme is.
