TRAINING PRIMARY TEACHERS

The National Languages Strategy, launched in 2002, contains a commitment to the introduction of an entitlement to language learning for every 7-11 year old pupil by 2010:

“Every child should have the opportunity throughout Key Stage 2 to study a foreign language and develop their interest in the culture of other nations. They should have access to high quality teaching and learning opportunities, making use of native speakers and e-learning. The Key Stage 2 language learning programme must be delivered at least in part in class time.”

In order that our local primary schools are ready for this enormous challenge, Barbara Harper and Nicola Hobbs have been working with some of their teachers to equip them with the skills they need to teach languages themselves. In the first instance, all the primary schools involved in our partnership have been provided with training and resources to deliver the Year 3 Scheme of Work in either French or Spanish. Teaching of this began in September 2005. Over the coming years we shall continue to support them so that they are well placed to meet the Government’s ambitious target.

The schools involved in the training partnership are:

  • Adel Primary School
  • All Saints Primary School
  • Ashfield Primary School
  • Bramhope Primary School
  • Pool C of E Primary School
  • Westgate Primary School
  • The Whartons School
