YEAR 8 SPANISH TRIP

Year 8

SPANISH TRIP

27th – 31st May 2005

NUMBER OF STUDENTS  45 students
YEAR GROUPS Year 8
LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • To appreciate some of the similarities and differences between the UK and Spain.
  • To appreciate the work of the artist Antoni Gaudí.
  • To be able to use some basic language for the purposes of real communication (eg. greeting hotel staff, asking for their key).

Forty five students and five staff travelled to Barcelona for the five-day trip, staying in the coastal resort of Calella. Organised by Miss Hobbs, the very busy itinerary included visits to Gaudí’s Parc Güell and Sagrada Familia, the Gothic quarter, Las Ramblas, the Olympic Stadium, the Poble Espanyol, Camp Nou football stadium and museum, Port Aventura theme park and the Barcelona Aquarium. Most members of the group even had just enough energy left after all of that to enjoy the last night farewell party!

The varied programme ensured that there was something that appealed to everyone. The mixture of culture and fun meant that this was a real learning experience for all. Perhaps surprisingly many students commented that they had never been to an aquarium before, and cited this as the highlight. Likewise, many were impressed with the work of Gaudí, and fascinated by the implications of his premature death, and the legacy of the Sagrada Familia. The fact that this is still unfinished was novel for many students, who realised that they had never previously seen a “work in progress” of this sort of “historical” building.
