GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP DAY

The half-termly PSHE/Citizenship “Enhanced Curriculum Day” in November 2004 took on the theme of Global Citizenship, with a special programme of activities and discussions which aimed for students:

  • To empathise with people different from themselves.
  • To appreciate aspects of other cultures.
  • To see the world as a global community, and to understand the political, economic, environmental and social implications of this.
  • To reflect on the process of participating.

As well as considering different issues of global citizenship, such as Fair Trade, Aid, Refugees and Asylum Seekers and Shanty Towns, each year group in Years 7-10 also had an interactive cultural activity with a visiting artist in the morning:

Year 7            Oral traditions / Story telling

Year 8            African street art

Year 9            African dance

Year 10          African drumming

The visiting artists were Rita Morrison from the Leeds Development Education Centre, and Augustine Chabba, Jali Kebba Suso, and Babacar Dieng from DrumCall.

Year 12 and 13 students were allocated to a tutor group to work with the students throughout the day. Some members of Year 12 delivered ‘nibbles’ from around the world to every student during the day to literally “give them a taste” of other cultures.

Building on the success of the day, this is now established as an annual event.
