OUR MFL CURRICULUM

On entry to the school in Year 7 students are randomly assigned to either the French or German half year group (known as “mini-schools”). They continue to study this language to GCSE. In Year 8, all students take up Spanish as a second MFL. Currently over 95% of students continue this to an accredited level at KS4.

The pattern of language provision has changed in recent years, and from September 2005 the range of courses can be summarised as follows:

Year 7

One half year group studies French, the other studies Germen.

 

Year 8

All students continue with French or German.
All students begin Spanish as a second MFL.
All students study a 10 week “taster” course in Mandarin Chinese.

 

Year 9

All students continue with French or German.
Small group of students in each language begin “fast-track” GCSE course.
All students continue to study Spanish as a second MFL.

 

Year 10

All students continue with French or German (GCSE Full Course).
All students follow Spanish to an accredited level (GCSE Short Course, GCSE  Full   Course or ABC Practical Languages Certificate in Spanish).
Students following the Work Related Learning programme study an ABC  Practical Languages Certificate in their first language (French or German) only.

 

Year 11

All students continue with the language courses they started in Year 10,
except Work Related Learning students.

 

Year 12

AS French, German and Spanish.
GCSE Italian.
AVCE Spanish for Vocational students.
All other students complete a 12 week language “survival” course in either Russian,   Italian or Portuguese, using the BBC “Talk” course.

 

Year 13

A Level French, German and Spanish.

 

Mandarin Chinese runs as an after-school class in Years 9, 10 and 11 and can lead to accreditation through the ABC Practical Languages Certificate.
