HOW TO BORROW A BOOK

How to borrow a book from the Fiction Library or the Information Library

  1. First find the book you want to borrow.
  1. Check that it may be borrowed. You may not borrow CD ROMs or reference only books in IL (marked with a red label on the spine , or a reference only label inside the book where the date label should be), or Year 8 only books in FL unless you are in Year 8.
  1. Take the book to the Librarian, or the teacher on duty in the Fiction Library. Your planner with the barcode makes the borrowing operation quicker.
  1. The librarian or the teacher will scan your barcode and the book’s barcode. If you have lost your barcode you can still borrow books. Just tell the supervisor your name and show your planner.
  1. The Eclipse software will register the loan. Make sure the librarian stamps the date label in the book as a reminder for you of when to bring the book back.

If the alarm sounds when you go out of the library you must bring the book back for further processing. To encourage positive use of the library a genuine loan, successfully returned will earn a library stamp in your planner which can be redeemed for credits like other departments’ stamps.

  1. When returning a book, bring it to the librarian for scanning. Give the Librarian your planner open at the week in view for a library stamp.
  1. To help the Librarians, replace the book on the shelves in the proper section, using the DDC number in IL and the coloured spine labels and author’s surname in FL.
  1. If you want to continue to read the book after your two weeks is up you must renew the loan.

REMEMBER

  • Always have your planner with you
  • You are responsible, return books on time, return books properly
  • Put books away in the right place so you and others will find them again
  • See Mrs May or Mr Gillett if you have any problems

what happens if you keep a book too long?

The Library prepares a list of overdue books for each form and these are passed to form tutors who will warn you and remind you to return them. If the books are returned straight away there will be no penalty.
If they are not returned your Form Tutor will write a comment in your planner the second time and each further time your loan is on the list sent out. If the book is not returned you should make an appointment to see Mr Gillett or Mrs May every day until it is found , returned, paid for or written off.

If you have returned the book improperly, so that the library thinks you still have it, the burden of proof, and the responsibility is on you. You should see Mr Gillett or Mrs May and arrange to search the library for it during your breaks and lunchtimes.
Continued failure to resolve a problem with an overdue or lost book will result in a detention because the comment in your planner is the equivalent of an “around school misdemeanour” . Lost books must be paid for at cost (if known) or at a nominal rate of £6 for a Fiction book or £10 for an Information Library book.

If you have enjoyed a book from either the Fiction Library or the Information Library

you should write a review for others to read. You can do this by logging in to your account on SearchStar. To do this you should load up SearchStar, and click on the icon for My Account on the left hand side. You will be asked to key in your PIN (it is in your planner) and then to type in your password. To get your password you will need to see Mrs May and ask for it, telling her that you want to write a review. Once you have a password you can change it to one of your own. Once you have logged in click the tab on the right and a list of all the books you have borrowed appears.

Find the one you want to review, click on it and click the button in the bottom right labelled “Review”. A page appears headed with the title and author, your name and your form. Write your review beneath and click on the Save icon on the toolbar at the top when you have finished. The Library Manager will have to read and approve your review before other people will be able to see it. Write the title, author, your name and form on a piece of paper. Write the word REVIEW on it and give it to Mrs May or Mr Gillett so they can look at your review and approve it. When it has been approved you are entitled to three credits (nine stamps) and will be able to tell your friends to look up the title on SearchStar and enjoy your review.
