MUSIC AT PRINCE HENRY’S

PRINCE HENRY’S GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPECIALIST LANGUAGE COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

 

AIMS

  • To give all pupils the opportunity to experience music through active music-making, both vocal and instrumental, developing skills in the areas of performing, composing, listening, appraising, responding to and reviewing music and applying knowledge and understanding when listening to music.
  • To give musically talented pupils (as well as others) opportunities to develop these talents to a high level.

OBJECTIVES

  • To encourage pupils’ enjoyment of music.
  • To develop their ability to perform and compose music with understanding.
  • To develop their ability to listen to and appraise music, through the study of a variety of musical styles and traditions from year 7 through to GCSE and A Level.
  • To develop the talents of musically gifted pupils to a high standard through plenty of opportunities to perform in the various school ensembles/productions and through encouragement to participate in other musical ventures (Leeds Artforms ensembles; Opera North workshops; one-off workshops; concert/theatre visits; concert tours, etc).
  • To promote cultural exchanges and work as part of the Language College.

Curriculum organisation

At present students in the following year groups receive the following Music lessons per week:

 

  • Year 7 - 2 x 45 min lessons

  • Year 8 - 1 x 45 min lesson
  • Year 9 - 1 x 45 min lesson
  • Year 10 - 3 x 45 min lessons
  • Year 11 - 3 x 45 min lessons
  • Year 12 - 6 x 45 min lessons
  • Year 13 - 6 x 45 min lessons

 

At Key Stage 3 all pupils (in mixed ability form classes of around 30) follow lessons in line with the National Curriculum requirements for Music (11-14). The current schemes of work and timetable allow for one topic to be covered per term in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9.

Options at key stages 4 & 5

At Key Stage 4 students study the Edexcel GCSE Music course for final assessment at the end of Year 11.  Music is an optional course which students elect to study (if they so desire) towards the end of Year 9. This is also taught in a mixed ability group

At sixth form level, students can study either the AQA AS/A2 Music courses or the Edexcel AS/A2 Music Technology course.
