HONOURING RUGBY LEGACY

The historic legacy of rugby at Prince Henry’s has been celebrated this week, with the installation of a new Rugby Captains’ Honours Board.

The board, which is proudly displayed in the PE Faculty, contains the names of all the First XV Rugby Captains from 1960 onwards. The board was donated by local rugby legend an ex member of staff at the school, Pete Latham MBE.

Rugby has an illustrious history at the school, with many players going on to play for England youth teams, in rugby league sides, and for Otley RUFC, Old Otliensians RUFC and clubs across Yorkshire and beyond. 10 of the Old Otliensians squad who won the RFU National Junior Vase final in 2018 were ex Prince Henry’s players and the most famous alumni currently is Danny Care, England and Harlequins Scrum Half.

Deputy Faculty Leader PE & Sport, Dean Hyam said “It’s great to see current 1st XV rugby captain Jake Bentley added to our NEW 1st XV rugby captains board. The board has over 60 years of PHGS rugby history honoured and will be an inspiration for years to come. Our thanks to Peter Latham who gifted the board to the school. I look forward to seeing many more boys being added to this over the years.”

Prince Henry's Grammar School has established a Rugby Alumni Assocation for anyone who played the game at the school. Members receive an annual newsletter about the game at the school, with information on fixtures, achievements and any representative honours. In addition, the group, chaired by Pete Latham MBE, is looking to arrange reunions in the future - when circumstances allow. They will also receive a 'History of Rugby at PHGS' booklet which details past coaches, players and famous teams over the century that Rugby has been played at the school. It is free to join for all ex-PHGS Rugby players. Anyone wishing to join, please contact Chris Smith at stc@princehenrys.co.uk, for a GDPR-approved form.
