PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT PRINCE HENRY’S

This is a well-resourced, dynamic, forward thinking department comprising six full time specialist teachers, 1 part-time specialist teacher and a PE technician working hard to provide a varied, stimulating curriculum.

We firmly believe in ‘sport for all’ and strive to deliver a broad and balanced programme to our students.

Examination level Physical Education has been developed in recent years to enable our talented students the chance to succeed further.

We have a strong tradition within the area for developing young talent through curricular and extra curricular activities and we are committed to maintaining these high expectations.

Curriculum

Students in years 7 and 8 have above the recommended two hours of Physical Education a week, 45-minute lessons.  In year 9 they have two 45-minute lessons and Key Stage 4 students have two 45-minute lessons per week.  In Key stage 3 students follow a timetabled course with activities from 4 of 6 National Curriculum areas.  In KS4 students respect the National Curriculum Guidelines by following activities from two of the contextual areas using an option-based programme.

Examination Physical Education

Students can opt to take Physical Education as a GCSE in year 10.  They study the Edexcel specification and our results are among the best in the school.  The course is delivered in three lessons per week, which consist of two theory based and one practical based lessons.  Some Talented students in Year 9 are chosen to study GCSE Short Course 2 years early as part of the accelerated learning of G + T students in the Physical Education department, and these results have been outstanding.  KS5 students have the opportunity to study AQA AS/A2 Sport and Physical Education, these results are also among the best in the school.

Year 7

Students are taught mainly in mixed ability/gender tutor groups, but are separated for the games block of netball and rugby.  Students study the following activities for 5 to 6 weeks:  Badminton, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, striking games and hockey.

Year 8

Students are taught in single sex groups and study the same activities as they did in year 7.  However, the girls are taught in mixed ability class groups for gymnastics, swimming and athletics and are set for all the games activities.  The boys are grouped for rugby or hockey/basketball and are taught in these combinations all year.

Year 10/11

Students opt for an activity that is studied for a longer period, usually up to a term.  The activities are decided by the pupils but are heavily dependant on the number or teaching staff, facilities and the majority choice.  The department teach using a ‘Sport Education’ model and place great importance on leadership at KS4.

The SSCo from our local Sport College is with us for one day a week.  This enables the department to visit local primary schools and develop the already strong links.

The department also works closely with Leeds metropolitan University, Bradford University to host one or two trainee teachers per year.

Accommodation and Resources.

The department has good facilities but they are in need of modernisation.  They include:

Sportshall – one full size netball court, basketball court, 4 badminton courts, an indoor hockey pitch and whiteboard.

Gymnasium – good sized. Well equipped (4 full boxes, 5 spring boards, table, benches, wall bars, ropes, beams, and 30 mats) with sprung wooden floor and whiteboard.

Swimming Pool – this is owned by the school, but run by Leeds Leisure Services.  We have the use of this facility usually Monday – Thursday 9.00am – 3.30pm.

Extensive outdoor fields - with two full sized rugby pitch, two 200m running lines, two football pitches and a grid area.

A tarmacced hard surface - with 6 a side hockey pitch and two netball courts.  This also provides the run up for our larger teaching pit for long/triple jump.

A long jump pit - with 30m run up.

Two tennis/netball courts.

Wharfemeadows – this is a vast area of land with several rugby/football pitches.  In the summer term it is marked with a 400m track for sports day.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The PE department and several members of staff offer a wide variety of extra curricular activities.  The students have the opportunity to participate in many different activities.  These include, Football, Rugby, Netball, Cross-country, Athletics, Swimming, Gymnastics, Badminton, Hockey, Girls Football, Dance, Fitness, Table Tennis, Tennis, Rounders, Cricket and Basketball.

Teams are entered in the local school leagues and our rugby and netball teams regularly excel in all age levels often winning leagues, tournaments and cups.  We have many students who gain representative honours in their chosen sports, representing PHGS in Netball, Rugby, Tennis, Football, Cycling, Swimming, Gymnastics and Athletics at City, County and National level.

There are close well-established links with local sports clubs including the Otliensians (Old Scholars) Rugby and Hockey Clubs, Otley RFC, Otley Express, Otley Cricket club, Yorkshire RFC, Leeds Tykes, and West Yorkshire Netball.  The school also provides the training base for the very successful Otley Rhythmic Gymnastics Club.
