GIFTED AND TALENTED

IDENTIFICATION CRITERIA IN PE
Assessment in physical education is based on National Curriculum levels.
Talented in PE is judged on the National Curriculum levels achieved for the four strands:
  • ACQUIRING & DEVELOPING SKILLS
  • SELECTING AND APPLYING SKILLS AND COPOSITIONAL IDEAS
  • KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF FITNESS & HEALTH
  • EVALUATING AND IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
Year 7 1 - 3 POTENTIAL TALENT
Pupils may be currently achieving these levels but may have some barriers to learning, i.e. lack of parental support, learning difficulties, behavioural difficulties or emotional difficulties.
IDENTIFICATION OF TALENTED PUPILS
Identification of talented pupils in PE will be based on subjective and objective observation during normal PE lessons. Extension tasks may be used to aid identification where appropriate.

IDENTIFYING PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES RECOGNISING MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS
1 Size Height, Weight, Maturation 1 Drive Always wants to play and learn a sport
2 Speed Quickness over strides, speed over distance 2 Passion Loves the game

IDENTIFYING TALENTED PUPILS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Pupils at PHGS are identified as being talented in Physical Education in one or both of the following ways;

Pupils can be talented in Physical Education as identified in Physical Education lessons.

Or

Pupils can be talented at Sport as identified in Physical Education lessons and/or Extra-curricular activities and clubs.

IDENTIFICATION PRACTICES

Pupils are identified in lessons and extra-curricular clubs using the PE identification criteria.
Some pupils have been identified prior to Y7 using the Y6 transition Master classes held annually in the summer term.
Pupils are identified formally annually, however reviews and amendments to the talented cohort take place termly during departmental meetings.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Once identified these pupils are developed further using several initiatives and programmes.
