Course Content and Assessment

Year 12 AS Level
Module 1 Physiological and Psychological Factors which Improve Performance.

40% of the total AS marks
Written Unit of 1 ½ Hours
4 from 5 x 18 mark questions
20% of the total A Level marks

Module 2 Socio-Cultural & Historical Effects on Participation in Physical Activity and their Influence on Performance.

30% of the total AS marks.
Written Unit of 1 ¼ Hours.
3 from 4 x 18 mark questions.
15% of the total A Level marks.

Module 3 Analysis and Evaluation of the Factors which Improve Performance 30% of the total AS marks.
2 pieces of Coursework.
15% of the total A Level marks.
Year 13 A2 Level
Module 4 Physiological, Biomechanical and Psychological Factors which Optimise Performance. 15 % of the total A Level marks.
Written unit of 1 ¼ Hours.
4 from 5 x 15 mark questions.
Module 5 Factors Affecting the Nature and Development of Elite Performance and Synoptic Assessment. 17½% of the total A Level marks.
Written Unit of 1 ½ Hours and a Synoptic Assessment.
Module 6 Analysis and Critical Evaluation of the Factors which Optimise Performance and the Synoptic Assignment. 17½% of the total A Level marks.

Higher Education and Careers


An AS/A Level pass in Sport and Physical Education can lead to the following Higher Education Courses and Careers:
Sports Science Degree Sports Management Degree
Sports Administration Degree Sports Equipment and Clothing Design
Physiotherapy Education/Coaching

 

Entry Requirements


Students who take Sport and Physical Education at AS level do not necessarily need to have previously studied GCSE Physical Education but it is an advantage. Students who have not studied Physical Education should, however, preferably have a double B grade in GCSE Science, but at least a double C grade. Students who have studied GCSE Physical Education will normally have attained Grade B or higher.

Students need to be actively involved in at least one sport/game and play/participate to a high level.
