PSYCHOLOGY AT PRINCE HENRY’S

Welcome to the Psychology Department. The aim of this page is to offer access to extra resources for students, to support their study in this subject. You will find links to popular websites as well as activities to support learning and revision.

Psychology is a popular option for sixth form students only at PHGS, and is offered at both AS and A2 levels. The course is a general introduction to psychology, which provides an excellent basis for those who wish to take their study further, for example a degree in the subject.

The AS level course includes 6 approaches to psychology. ‘Approaches’ are different ways of looking at and explaining human behaviour, such as the Physiological approach which focuses on biological aspects such as the influence of brain processes and genetics on behaviour. Alternatively, the Behavioural approach focuses on the influence of learned experiences, including rewards and punishments. The 6 approaches together give a full explanation of human behaviour.

A2 level studies the application of psychological theory to problems in the real world, including criminological psychology, clinical psychology and child development. Research methods and statistics are an integral part of the course.

Psychology is also a very popular choice at degree level and many vocational courses, such as teaching, social work and medicine, also include some psychology. There are many careers for which psychology is useful, including human resources management, marketing and advertising. A higher degree is necessary to become a practising psychologist in areas such as educational psychology, clinical psychology, counselling, occupational therapy, research psychology and teaching.

Psychology is a relatively new subject, which continues to expand and develop. Read on to see how you can be part of it.
