KS5 COURSE OVERVIEW - BIOLOGY

TEACHER IN CHARGE: MS K ALLEN

We are all interested in ourselves and the rest of the living world. Studying Biology develops this interest into a real understanding of how living things work.

Course Content and Assessment

The AS and A2 courses encourage students to:

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of Biology;
  • Develop understanding of scientific methods;
  • Be aware of new technology which is relevant to Biology;
  • Recognise the value of Biology in society;
  • Sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in Biology.

The AS course has three modules in Year 12, all of which build on work which has been done in the Biology component of GCSE Science.

The A2 course contains another three modules and connections between the different areas of Biology are identified and developed.

Both courses are examined by written tests set by the Examination Board and coursework, which is assessed by the school. The coursework is 15% of the final mark.

Biology combines well with almost any other subject. The A2 course in Biology goes well with Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography, but other combinations are still possible.

Higher Education and Careers

A Biology qualification is a useful asset. It shows you have the skills to think and work scientifically. A2 Biology can lead into courses such as nursing, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, food science or environmental science.

Entry Requirements

Students who take Biology at AS level should have preferably a double B grade at GCSE level Science, but at least a double C grade.
