KS4 OVERVIEW - FOOD TECHNOLOGY

A.Q.A. Design & Technology: Food Technology

This is a two year course leading to the award of a GCSE. The course fulfils the Technology National Curriculum Attainment Targets.

Subject Content

This syllabus is designed to provide opportunities for investigation, designing, making and evaluation, which focus on the use of food as a material. Students will learn about the complex nature of food, and how to use tools and equipment to handle food well. The main focus is to prepare food products for a specific focus i.e. Food Outlet, Desserts, Bread products. The areas to be covered are Food Product Design, Development and Production, Food as a Material and Food Manufacturing and Processing. Students will get the chance to work with specialist computer software and hardware. All areas of study are related to the food manufacturing industry as well as the domestic setting.

All the designing and making activities that students undertake should result in useable and useful food products.

Scheme of Assessment

The scheme of Assessment has two components:-

  1. Terminal examination - 2 hours - Higher or Foundation level
    One externally set and marked examination paper (40%)
  2. Coursework Project - 40 hours
    The coursework project (60%) is a design and make activity that should result in a useable, useful food product (i.e. Design and make a low cost range of “meals for one” which could be sold from the freezer cabinets of local retail outlets).

Food is essential for life – we now have a greater choice than ever before about what to eat but everybody ought to know what we are putting into our bodies and what the effects could be. This course will help you in your daily life, make you more aware as a consumer and increase your understanding of an everyday activity.

The course is designed to enable all students, both boys and girls, to reach high levels of success. It is an excellent preparation for the AS/A2 course in Product Design, a new and exciting course offered in the Sixth Form.
