TRAVEL LEGACY LEAVES LASTING LEGACY

A student enjoyed an amazing experience volunteering in Ghana, alongside his peers, thanks to a travel scholarship.

The scholarship is given to Sixth Form students who are intending to travel. The bursary was originally donated by the late Mr Douglas Waye, former Chair of the Foundation Governors and Honorary Citizen of Otley.

Maurice Baldwin travelled to Ghana as part of a group of students from Prince Henry’s to help build a playground at an orphanage in the country. He said “I'll never forget the smiles and kindness of the Ghanaian people who I had the pleasure of living and working alongside whilst building the playground. The amazing sense of pride and fulfilment upon completing the playground will stay with me for the rest of my life, knowing that I have made a positive impact on the lives of the children in that orphanage.”

The Waye Travelling Scholarship was presented by Douglas Waye’s daughter, Mrs Pam Beck, Secretary to the Foundation Governors, and the present Chair, Mr Ian Bearpark.

The Waye Travelling Scholarship is one of several awards made annually at Prince Henry’s Grammar School which are supported by local businesses and local people.
