Leeds Community Mandarin Chinese School
Every Saturday afternoon, over 150 young people from across the Leeds area attend lessons in Mandarin Chinese, now held at Temple Moor High School. Established by Prince Henry’s in partnership with the local Chinese community, the Leeds Community Mandarin Chinese School was one of the flagship initiatives when we launched our Language College community programme.
The school opened in September 2000 to make provision for young people from the Mandarin Chinese community to learn to read and write the language which many of them speak in the home. Such has been the success of this venture that it has expanded to provide seven separate teaching groups, and well over a hundred students have now achieved top grades at GCSE in Mandarin Chinese, sitting their examinations at Prince Henry’s. Many of these students have also gone on to achieve accreditation at AS and A Level.
This unique partnership has received acclaim at a local, national and international level, including press coverage in the Times Educational Supplement and a Chinese newspaper. Although Prince Henry's no longer provides direct financial assistance for the LCMCS, we continue to support the school's volunteer Management Committee, and are proud to serve as the examination centre for students from the school.
