One-Off Workshops 2026/2027

Our One-Off Workshop Days this year are Saturday 21 November 2026 and Saturday 13 March 2027.

Please note: as well as any materials fees etc stated in particular classes, there are also enrolment fees for the workshops, to pay for the tutors and overheads. We also need you to fill out an enrolment form, so that we can get in touch with instructions for the day. You can find this information here.

African Drumming - taster

All levels. Saturday 21 November or Saturday 13 March - 1pm to 4pm. Alison Lyon.

Art and the Techniques of Mark-Making

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 4pm. Sue Dixon.
A look at artists and the ways mark-making has changed. An immersive and practical class which will explore your creativity. Enjoy mindfulness activities to open up experimentation and ways of playing to build collaborative experimentation. A range of activities will help you build a final abstract composition.  All materials provided.

Acrylic Textures - an experimental workshop

All Levels. Saturday 13 March - 10am to 4pm. Sue Dixon.
Break free from the brush and discover unconventional tools and dynamic layering techniques to create rich, dimensional surfaces. Use squeegees and palette knives to create dramatic, scraped layers; apply paint with piping bags for raised, sculptural line work; learn screen printing basics on canvas to embed sharp graphic patterns. Join us for a day of experiments and fun without fear, just enjoying the freedom, culminating in a finished experimental piece on Calico canvas. All materials provided.

Deaf Awareness

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 1pm. Karen Healy.
Learn how you communicate with Deaf people. Promoting understanding, inclusivity, and support for the Deaf and hard of hearing community, as well as raising awareness about Deaf Culture.

Fly Tying - the next level

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 4pm. Phil Holding.
Learn to create the life span of a Mayfly in one day. Enjoy taking a full day to create these flies which follow through the development of a Mayfly. Materials and equipment will be available to purchase in class.

Geology: Mass Extinctions

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 1pm to 4pm. Jed Atkinson.
98% of all life that has ever existed has died out. For most species their demise is gradual and unremarkable, but Earth’s history is punctuated by intervals of global catastrophe, huge volcanoes, deadly oceans, and meteorite impacts. Explore the causes and consequences of mass extinctions – times when over 75% of species disappeared in a relatively short time. 

Geology: Natural Hazards

All Levels. Saturday 13 March - 1pm to 4pm. Jed Atkinson.
Volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural hazards remind us of the power of planet Earth – but what is the science behind these awe-inspiring events? In this workshop we will explore why earthquakes are so unpredictable, how volcanoes form and why they erupt in different styles

History: Mary Queen of Scots - a Tudor Tragedy?

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 4pm. Suzanne Caine.
For over 400 years, Mary’s story has continued to fascinate, but was she the tragic heroine and martyr she and her supporters thought her to be or the architect of her own downfall?  This day school will consider the arguments on both sides and, through examination of primary sources, invite you to re-assess your opinion of  ‘the faire devil of Scotland’.  

History:  Portraits as Propaganda - the power of Symbolism in the 16th Century

All Levels. Saturday 13 March - 10am to 4pm. Suzanne Caine.
Before social media, TV and newspapers, portraiture was the propaganda of the 16th century, filled with symbolism designed to be understood by a largely illiterate society.  The ruling classes carefully controlled the composition and distribution of their portraits to demonstrate conspicuous consumption, status and political importance.  Come and decode the meaning of sieves, pelicans, ermine and other symbols in 16th Century portraits!

Introduction to Latin

Beginners. Saturday 13 March - 10am to 1pm. Elena Montesano.
Learn about history and heritage, from the foundation of Rome to the Statue of Liberty and how Rome shaped many ideas in the West; then try your hand at Latin - looking at derivatives, flexion and word order.

Seasonal Lino Cut Printing & Card Making

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 4pm. Patti Smith.
Celebrate the changing seasons! Design and carve your own seasonal motif in very easy to cut soft cut lino before learning how to ink and print your unique design onto a selection of cards and papers. Seasonal images and templates will be provided for inspiration, making it easy to get started, but you can to bring your own ideas too. Leave with your carved lino block and beautiful handmade cards inspired by the season.  All materials provided.

Lino Cut Printing & Chine Collé

All Levels. Saturday 13 March - 10am to 4pm. Patti Smith.
Create your own prints, and explore Chine-collé techniques. Learn how to carve and layer a single lino block to build rich, multi-coloured prints. Chine-collé is the technique of using coloured tissue or thin papers which is bonded to the print to add texture, colour and depth. Uses softcut lino which is softer to carve and easier on the hands. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Expect plenty of colour, experimentation and creative inspiration in a friendly studio atmosphere. All materials provided.

Macramé - Festive Knots

Beginners. Saturday 21 November - 1pm to 4pm. Klare Jackson.
A cosy, creative session where you’ll learn the foundational knots of macramé and craft your own beautiful Christmas decorations. Whether you’re completely new to macramé or looking for a festive refresher, it’s the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit and take home something handmade and heartfelt. Materials cost of £5 payable on the day.

Mindful Photography with your phone

All Levels. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 1pm. Louise Rayner.
Lose yourself in creativity and be truly present in the moment. Focus on slowing down, noticing light, colour and detail, and use photography as a way to encourage creativity, mindfulness and connection to the world around us.

Improve your camera photography in a day

All Levels. Saturday 13 March - 10am to 4pm. Richard Sells.
Designed for anyone new to photography or wanting to build a better understanding of the basics.  Aimed at DSLR and mirrorless camera users, it combines practical work with easy-to-follow teaching to help you move beyond automatic mode. Learn key camera skills and simple techniques to help you take more creative and confident photographs.

Portuguese Language & Culture

Beginners. Saturday 21 November - 10am to 12.30pm. Sandra Luz Santos.
On the trail of England’s oldest ally.... Discover the history and origins of Portugal, its language, culture, people, music and most importantly its food and drink - a day without food is a day not worth living as far as the Portuguese are concerned. Discover a lot about one of the smallest but oldest countries in Europe.
